Yes, PERKESO and SOCSO are the same organisation. PERKESO stands for Pertubuhan Keselamatan Sosial, the Malay name, and SOCSO stands for Social Security Organisation, the English name. Payslips, employers and government forms use the two names interchangeably.

What PERKESO administers

PERKESO runs Malaysia's social security protection for employees under three laws, summarised in the table below.

What PERKESO (SOCSO) administers
SchemeLawWhat it covers
Employment Injury SchemeEmployees' Social Security Act 1969 (Act 4)Accidents at work
Invalidity SchemeEmployees' Social Security Act 1969 (Act 4)Invalidity or death not related to work
Self-Employment schemeSelf-Employment Social Security Act 2017 (Act 789)Self-employed workers
Employment Insurance System (EIS)Employment Insurance System Act 2017 (Act 800)Support after losing a job

What is EIS?

EIS, or Sistem Insurans Pekerjaan (SIP), is the Employment Insurance System. It is the part of PERKESO that supports employees who lose their jobs, and it is paid for by separate contributions from both employee and employer. It is not the same as the SOCSO contribution, but both appear on your payslip.

How much do you and your employer contribute?

SOCSO and EIS contributions are calculated on monthly wages up to a RM6,000 ceiling. For an employee under 60 earning RM5,000 a month, the employee pays RM25.00 SOCSO and RM10.00 EIS, and the employer pays RM87.50 SOCSO and RM10.00 EIS. Wages above RM6,000 do not raise the contribution.
