These statutory overtime rates apply to employees covered by the Employment Act 1955 — currently those earning RM4,000/month or less, plus manual/machinery-operating workers regardless of wage. Employees outside this coverage may still get overtime under their employment contract, but at whatever rate it specifies.

Overtime multipliers at a glance

  • Normal working day: 1.5× hourly rate per hour.
  • Rest day: 0.5 day's wages if you work half a normal day or less; 1 day's wages up to a full normal day; 1 day's wages plus 2× hourly rate for hours beyond that.
  • Public holiday: 2 days' wages for up to a normal day's work, plus 3× hourly rate for hours beyond that.
