Three salary terms appear on Malaysian contracts and payslips: basic salary, gross salary and net salary. They are not the same, and mixing them up leads to wrong expectations about take-home pay.

The table summarises each term. Your payslip may also show items such as allowances, overtime and bonuses.

Basic, gross and net salary
TermMeaningWhat it includes
Basic salary (gaji pokok)The fixed base pay in your contractExcludes allowances, overtime and bonuses
Gross salary (gaji kasar)Total pay before any deductionBasic pay plus allowances and other regular pay
Net salary (gaji bersih)What reaches your bank accountGross pay minus EPF, SOCSO, EIS, PCB and other deductions

A worked example

Take a gross salary of RM5,000 a month for a single Malaysian employee under 60. EPF takes RM550, SOCSO RM25, EIS RM10 and PCB RM108.25, so the net salary, or take-home pay, is RM4,306.75. The employer pays EPF, SOCSO and EIS on top of the gross salary, which is why the cost to the employer is higher than the gross pay.

Why the difference matters

Offers and contracts usually quote gross salary, but you spend your net salary. Some benefits may be calculated on basic pay, so check your contract. EPF contributions are calculated on your wages as defined by the EPF Act, which can include allowances and commissions, not only basic salary.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between gross and net salary?

Gross salary is your pay before any deduction. Net salary, also called take-home pay, is what you receive after EPF, SOCSO, EIS, PCB and other deductions are taken out.

What is basic salary?

Basic salary, or gaji pokok, is the fixed base pay stated in your contract, before allowances, overtime and bonuses.

Is the salary in my offer letter gross or net?

Offer letters normally state gross salary, so your take-home pay will be lower. Check the wording, and use a salary calculator to see your net figure.
