Your Annual Tax Relief Checklist Before You File
A practical, no-nonsense rundown of the reliefs most working Malaysians can claim — and the receipts you should be keeping right now.
Tax relief season tends to sneak up on people. The frustrating part isn't the filing itself — it's realising in March that you didn't keep a receipt for something you were entitled to claim eleven months earlier. Here's a practical checklist to run through during the year, not just at filing time.
Reliefs that apply automatically
Your individual relief and your EPF/SOCSO-EIS contribution reliefs don't need any extra paperwork from you — they're based on amounts your employer already reports. If you're married and your spouse doesn't have their own income, spousal relief is similarly straightforward, though it does need to be claimed correctly in your assessment.
Reliefs that need receipts you probably already have
Lifestyle relief covers a surprisingly broad basket: books, computers and smartphones, internet subscriptions, and sporting equipment or gym memberships. Most people qualify for at least part of this without trying — the trick is just not deleting the e-receipt. Medical expense relief for serious conditions, fertility treatment, or a general health check-up (capped separately within the medical relief) is another one where keeping the clinic's official receipt, not just a payment notification, matters.
Reliefs that need a bit of planning
Life insurance and takaful premiums, EPF voluntary top-ups, SSPN education savings deposits, and parental medical or care expenses are all reliefs where the amount you can claim is directly tied to how much you actually paid in during the year — meaning there's a real, calculable benefit to reviewing your contributions before the year closes, not after.
Don't forget dependents
Child relief scales with your child's age and education status, and disabled-individual relief (for yourself, your spouse, or a child) is often under-claimed simply because people don't realise they qualify or forget to register the required OKU documentation with the relevant authority in time.
Where this calculator fits in
Our PCB calculator lets you plug in the reliefs you expect to claim and see the effect on your monthly tax deduction immediately, rather than waiting for your annual filing to find out. It's not a substitute for LHDN's official relief list — always check the current year's gazette or MyTax portal for the definitive figures — but it's a fast way to see whether a relief you're planning to claim is actually worth adjusting your finances around.
